District 271 M&O Levy
Position:
The Coeur d’Alene Area Chamber of Commerce supports
District 271 in their effort to pass their 2007 replacement
levy for Maintenance and Operations (M&O).
Rationale:
The Chamber has long been a supporter of education in the
region. We recognize that the health of our region and its
business is intrinsically linked to the educational
opportunities of our youth. Currently Coeur d’Alene School
District 271 operates with a $7.3 million M&O levy. The two
year period for that levy is set to expire so the district
is seeking a replacement levy May 15th. This levy would
require a simple majority to be approved and would continue
funding for a litany of programs and services often taken
for granted but important to providing a balanced and
complete education. Among the programs that the new $8.8
million M&O levy would support are professional-technical
education, art & music, athletics, and remediation services.
Since 1986 the community of Coeur d’Alene has supported the
district through an M&O levy. In 2005 residents were paying
$1,045 to support local schools. In 2006 this amount
dramatically decreased to only $225 and 2007 it is projected
at $238. The M&O request by 271 breaks down to $1.03 per
$1,000 assessed value and equates to 15% of the districts
entire budget.
District 271 is exemplary in its efforts to provide quality
education. Statistically, 271 boasts an impressive 87%
graduation rate. The enriching dynamic of Coeur d’Alene
Schools is linked to the support shown locally through
Maintenance and Operations levies. The Coeur d’Alene Chamber
supports 271 in its effort and urges voters within the
district to do the same.
